Brett Myers

'''Brett Allen Myers''' (born August 17, 1980 in Jacksonville, Florida) is a MLB starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.

High school career

As a senior at Englewood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Myers posted an 8 win-2 loss record and a 0.80 ERA in 78.0 innings pitched. He was an amateur boxer when he was a teenager.

Domestic violence charge

Myers was arrested on June 23, 2006 and charged with assaulting his wife Kim Myers on a downtown Boston street. His wife alleges that he struck her twice with his fist. Witnesses stated he slapped her, and then pulled her off the ground by her hair. An anonymous male witnessing the incident who placed a call to 9-1-1 described it as follows: "I got a guy smacking a girl around right in front of the Hynes Convention Center. He’s right in front of the fire station that’s in front of the Hynes Convention Center. She’s crying. She’s got no shoes on. He’s a pretty big guy in a white shirt. And he’s hitting her hard. I saw it. A couple of other people saw it.""http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/14509799.htm Transcript of 911 calls", The Philadelphia Inquirer, published May 7, 2006, accessed August 15, 2006.

Police responding to a 911 call at 12:26 a.m. found 'Kim Myers crying and with a slight swelling on the left side of her face'. Brett was later released from police custody on $200 bond, which was paid for by his wife. Myers made his scheduled start against the Boston Red Sox the following day, on June 24, 2006 http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060623&content_id=1519359&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb, where he was booed by the 35,564-strong crowd at Fenway Park. The Phillies received criticism from some media members and women's organizations for not benching Myershttp://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/06/25/phillies_should_have_stopped_myerss_start/. Myers brought additional criticism upon himself with his choice of words in apologizing for the incident when he stated: "I'm sorry it had to go public".http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=104336

On June 27, however, the Phillies announced that Myers would take a leave of absence from the team until after the 2006 All-Star break in July, and sent him to their Class A affiliate Clearwater Threshers, although not to pitch. Myers returned to the Phillies roster on July 16, and was their starting pitcher in the following game. He is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on August 4, though he is not required to appear personally at that time. On July 23, 2006 Myers started his first baseball game in Philadelphia since the alleged incident. He was initally booed at first by Philadelphia fans, however he was cheered thoroughout for his good performance on the mound. Myers lasted 8 plus innings and allowed just
